What started out as the sport of kings and was practiced mostly by men has exploded to include women and young girls in increasing numbers. All you need is a surfboard, some swimming ability and a nearby beach.
A good operator is a good sign they take the business of surfing instruction seriously. Another North Shore Big Wave surf spot is Waimea Beach. The wave is moving toward you, so if you keep moving toward it, you will be surprised at how quickly you can get there, and possible even slip right under the lip.
Surfing gear such as wetsuits and surfboards that are in good shape and well maintained is another great sign that they are serious about their business. Without the ability to paddle you will not only never catch a wave, but more than likely never even get to the line up. So many times I have seen a beginner surfer spend a stack of coin on all the latest gear and then spend an hour getting thrown around in the white water, wondering how everyone else made it out the back, it is 90% in your paddling ability. It resembles the longboard in length but it is thinner, less stable, and also called the Thruster, likes large, intimidating waves.
Another great thing to do is to practice sitting on your board when your in the water. Generally the better the surfer the smaller their board in length, width and thickness.
