There are certain terms that might confuse a beginner, and picking out your first board might seem a bit overwhelming. It's great because anywhere there are waves, chances are people surf them in one form or another.
The main shapes of surfboards are longboards, mini-mals, fish, shortboards and hybrids of these shapes. Even experienced surfers will sometimes be caught off guard when the sets pop up a little early then expected. Today there are many surfing accessories in use that were not available to surfers of the 1960's such as wetsuits, leashes and rash guards.
In the summertime, the water is flat and is a charming spot for snorkeling, fishing and swimming. The longboard is the perfect board to learn to surf on, the length and width of these boards are designed to maximise stability and are easy to paddle on. Make sure you are a strong enough paddler and are physically fit enough to surf.
Practice jumping up in one motion, standing side on and keeping the board planing if possible. Be sure to get wax for your water temperature, as otherwise the wax can melt off or become slippery.
